Don’t let the past dictate your future
It’s been a fun ride, but I’m sorry to say that mover shaker is a thing of the past.
To give you some background, I started mover shaker as a creative outlet a couple years back when I moved to DC to attend grad school. I left all of my instruments back at home to minimize distractions, but that left a huge void in my life. I missed creating music. Music was my entire life up until that point and I couldn’t shed it. I decided to download some free (super low budget) programs to cut up music to create mashups as a temporary solution until I could afford equipment to make beats/electronic music.
After about a year of making terrible mashups, I guess they got better. I started posting them online and blogs were taking notice. I released about 30 mashups, a few of them hit #1 on Hype Machine. Then I took a bunch of stuff I cut up over the course of two years and released a full length album, The Fortress of Steezhood. Sunset in the Rearview supported the release and tens of thousands of people downloaded the album. Even though my style of production has completely changed, I’m still so proud of that album.
Around that time, I graduated, got a decent job, and could now afford the equipment I needed to start producing music that I had floating around in my head.
The first remix I released was of Lana Del Rey’s Video Games. The song blew up. Like, way bigger than I would have ever expected. It hit a quarter million plays (currently 350k+), NY Times wrote about it, MTV applauded it, Prabal Gurung used it during a fashion show (which Nicki Minaj & Lana Del Rey attended), and so much more. It was tough to create music after that as I always compared everything to the success of that remix. I probably remixed 100 songs since then, but only released two of them.
The stuff I created over the past year is so different than what mover shaker was originally all about. It’s way more “me,” but since you only know me as mover shaker, it may seem too disconnected to what I released previously. That’s why I’m going to release my new stuff under a new name. It’ll make sense that way. I’ll let you know when I release some new stuff under the new name.
I won’t forget you guys. Promise to stay in touch. I’ll leave you with my Lana Del Rey remix.
Until next time.

I used a sample from a Whitney Houston interview at the start of my new album. I used it because I think she’s adorable in the interview, despite Serge Gainsbourg telling her he wanted to sex her up. She handled it well. R.I.P. Whitney Houston

My track, “Sexting in the Sun” made it on Sunset in the Rearview’s best mash-ups of 2011 list. Go here to see the list/download all of the tracks in a zip folder. Perfect for a NYE party.
Big thanks to Lydia and everyone over at Sunset in the Rearview. xx
Big thanks to Anne for coming up with the title of the track. And much love to Rachel for being my biggest supporter/curator.
Full Prabal Gurung NYFW video with original soundtrack
Thanks for sending this in! I never saw the full video with the original soundtrack. It’s kind of surreal to watch Nicki Minaj and Lana Del Rey listening to my remix.
Insane. Finally caught some footage of the Prabal Gurung show with my Lana Del Rey remix. [via Elle.tv]
